Taoism, also known as Daoism, is a Chinese religious and philosophical ideology and is still popular today. Taoism shows us the importance of emptying the mind and stopping obsessing with our thoughts.

If you are depressed you are living in the past. If you are anxious you are living in the future. If you are at peace you are living in the present.

Lao Tzu

It is crucial to realize that what occurs in this world is neutral. For instance, our thoughts are what makes something positive or negative. We should improve ourselves by stopping to improve ourselves.

Tao te Ching: the Philosophy of Flow

The book: ‘Tao Te Ching,’ also known as ‘Daodejing’ or ‘Tao Te King’, is one of the essential writings of Taoism, one of the great three Chinese philosophies alongside Confucianism and Buddhism. This book of Taoism is the most translated work after the bible.

Daoism the path

Tao, Chinese for ‘the way,’ is beyond everything our senses perceive. It is essential to know that it doesn’t matter how long you have studied this. One simply can’t understand the Tao of Taoism.

We, humans, are trying to make everything more understandable in attempting to understand everything.

Sadly, this will drive us further away from finding and experiencing the Tao. Taoism is kind of similar to the Stoic approach to nature. They state that we should embrace the outcome, whatever that outcome may be.

The Tao that can be described is not the eternal Tao. The name that can be spoken is not the eternal name.

Taoism: Lao Tzu and the vinegar

A story about the 3 great Asian spiritual leaders who each tasted vinegar. The first one to taste it was Confucius, or K’ung Fu-Tzu, which tasted the vinegar rather sour. K’ung Fu-Tzu found that the world mainly consists of degenerate people. The second one was Gautama Buddha, who said that the vinegar tasted bitter and that the world was full of suffering.

The last one to taste the vinegar was Lao Tzu, also known as Laozi. Tzu stated that the vinegar tasted sweet because an underlying harmony connects us all. And that was the Dao. According to ancient writings, he was tired of his life and vanished.

It is being said that since that day, he became a hermit. He was tired of the area where he was living and said that it was all morally corrupted.

Building our own Prisons with Ethics

According to the Taoism writings, we build our own prison by creating morals and ethics to alter the natural flow by fixing principles and rulesets. Lao Tzu knows that the intentions of morals and ethics are there for good, but this is limiting us from ‘going with the flow.’

Living in Harmony with ‘The Way’

Taoism Tao means the path or the way of the world. It generally describes the path to virtue. For instance, manifesting happiness and being in harmony with the Tao. We all have a purpose which we should attract. Therefore, one should live more time in stillness. Learning about the flowing and how to live with it instead of against it.

It is when our mind is still that the universe will surrender. Secondly, we should not hurry but instead be patient, just like nature. Lastly, we should empty ourselves of everything. We must find the golden middle between anxiety and boredom.

Taoism Yin and Yang

According to Taoism, by living more in silence, we will be more in touch with our own greatest selves. Being in a flow state allows us to forget things like pressure, anxiety, results, and failures from the past. We should move with the current instead of resisting it. Letting go and focusing on this moment is vital for inner peace. We should take the middle path; stay centered close to our own nature and close to constant, just like Tao.

Being Whoppingly Effortless: Wu Wei

Many people consider Wu Wei as an act of uselessness and unproductiveness. For example, we might say that nature is unproductive as well. It is slow and moves without force, but it always gets things done. Wu Wei means a few different things, which include the non-doing and doing nothing:

  • Non-action
  • Effortless action
  • Action of non-action

Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished

Lao Tzu

Everyone is trying to improve the world in their own way. We all want to be happier, earn more money, possess power, fame, or knowledge. Therefore, we all think that momentary pleasure is happiness obtained with money. But that is untrue.

We should all live life at ease and enjoy the beautiful sights. We can get a lot of pleasure by seeing beautiful things, such as hearing beautiful sounds. Nevertheless, we shouldn’t try to be anything else. Therefore, according to Taoism, everyone is born with specific unique characteristics of great value.
