Gottlob Frege and Bertrand Russell are usually given credit for having an idea of what names mean and how they are used. The idea behind the theory is that the meanings of names are the same as the descriptions that speakers use to describe them. At the same time, the objects that fit these descriptions are chosen to be their referents.
