The lack of belief in the existence of God or gods is the opposite of theism; the state of not believing in God or gods. This definition includes both people who say there are no gods and people who say they don’t believe in gods. But most narrow definitions of atheism only include the first one. This is what the more general, but rarely used, term “atheism” refers to.
